Who we are

Pinaroo Roma Inc.: A Legacy of Care

  • Late 1950's
    Fundraising Begins
In 1958, Roma’s Rotary Club proposed pensioner cottages. By 1959, fundraising began under President Rex Gray through raffles and community events, with Norm Smith famously securing a truck to help move supplies.
  • 1960's
    Early Foundations
Early goals included securing land, formal registration, and setting eligibility criteria. Bill Ewan became chairman in 1965, helping fast-track approvals. By 1968, five cottages were built and opened, funded by loans and community support. In 1969, a $100,000 legacy from Mrs McGowan was granted, conditional on the project being operational.
  • 1970's
    Official Opening
In 1971, responding to evolving care standards, Pinaroo added 12 single residential rooms and an amenities block, officially opened by Queensland Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, with government subsidies matching $3 for every $1 raised. Six more units were added in 1977, opened by the Member for Roma, Hon. K.B. Tomkins MLA.
  • 1980's and 1990's
    Facility Upgrades
Between 1983 and 1993, Pinaroo added rooms, upgraded facilities, and improved accessibility. The Lions Club led the committee from 1986 to 1997. In the late 1990s, Pinaroo became incorporated as Pinaroo Roma Inc., with committee membership limited to Rotarians and their partners.
  • Early 2000's
    Growth Plan
In 2000, a 10-year plan was launched to expand Pinaroo and meet new building standards. Between 2001 and 2007, 26 new units, a commercial kitchen, a 12-bed Special Care Wing, and new facilities were added. The $10.5 million project was largely funded by the Commonwealth, contributing $7.7 million.

    Future-Focused Care
Pinaroo has continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of the Roma community. Since 2017, two additional wings have been constructed, and one existing wing has been renovated to serve as a potential second Special Care Wing, if required in the future. As we look ahead, our focus remains on meeting the growing needs of Roma’s ageing population with high-quality, responsive care.
